Deep Drilling
Definition: What is deep drilling?
The term deep drilling refers to geological drilling into deep layers of the earth's crust. Deep drilling is performed in order to develop deposits through geological drilling into deep ground layers for crude oil, natural gas or geothermal exploration and production.
A derrick is required for onshore deep drilling (on land). Drilling platforms or drilling ships are used for offshore deep drilling (in the ocean or over a shelf).
The rotary drilling process is frequently used in geological deep drilling for crude oil, natural gas and geothermal energy.
